The importance of anaesthesiology as a department in modern healthcare institutions is paramount. An anaesthesiologist’s role is not just confined to putting people to sleep before surgery and waking them up when it’s over. They are the first to diagnose and treat medical complications that appear before, during and after surgery. They possess a wide range of knowledge regarding medications and how the human body works and responds to the impacts of surgery.

CRAFT harbours a team of highly proficient anaesthesiologists who are responsible for taking care of patients from all specialities when undergoing an operation.

What an anaesthesiologist does can be easily summarised in three steps.

1. Preoperative Evaluation and preparation of anaesthesia

In this first step, onus is put on obtaining the medical history of the patient, performing physical examination where the risk factors and complications involved are given prominence, and then, determining the patient’s functional capacity.

2. Operative Management

It is the responsibility of an anaesthesiologist to constantly monitor the vital signs of the patient during surgery. When under anaesthesia, he/she keeps check of the volume the patient inhales and carbon dioxide exhaled. Besides, they are also in charge of the IV fluids to prevent dehydration, blood transfusions as and when required and basically all the complications, and critical care that may arise during a surgical procedure.

3. Postoperative care and Management

Quite simply, it involves the comprehensive medical care and management a patient receives after he/she undergoes surgery. The type of postoperative care depends on the type of surgery and the patient’s medical history. Normally, the process includes pain management and wound care.

Commonly performed surgeries at CRAFT:

  • All Obstructive and Gynaecological procedures: Laparoscopy, Caesarean sections, laparotomy etc.
  • Paediatric cases of all age: Neonatal circumcision, hernia repair, and also other major surgical procedures
  • Andrology procedures: Varicocele, Micro-TESE, hernioplasty etc.
  • Other day care procedures: Dilation and curettage (D&C), laparoscopic sterilization, ovum retrieval, hysteroscopy etc.

Other activities carried out by the department of anaesthesiology:

Nonsurgical pain relief management:

Epidural analgesia for normal delivery patients: The procedure which involves the injection of local anaesthetics and adjuvants into the epidural space of the spinal cord. It is an extremely effective and popular measure adopted to address labour pain.

Regular follow up of postoperative patients:

We feel responsible for the wellbeing of our patients who undergo surgery with us and we have thorough follow-up programmes to constantly keep check of their health even once they are discharged from the postoperative ICU. We strive our best to make sure to minimize the pain at the time of surgery and that they return to their normal life as soon as possible.
